In companies of all sizes and locations a persistent disconnect is found between HR departments and the employees they serve. ADP®, a leading global provider of human capital management solutions, revealed findings from several new ADP Research Institute® studies. The findings revealed that the disconnect extends all the way up to senior leadership, who also appear out of touch with employee perspectives.
The list of areas where employees, HR and senior leadership are not on the same page include:
-HR & management rank their compensation and benefits higher than employees do.
-Upward mobility -- the primary retention incentive - received significantly lower ratings from employees than from HR.
-employees rank senior leadership as low as HR.
"What this study shows is, despite efforts to improve communications and facilitate better relationships between HR, senior leadership and employees, a big gap remains, said Ahu Yildirmaz, VP and head of the ADP Research Institute. "Companies are operating without a fully engaged workforce, an issue that has to be addressed if they are going to effectively manage their human capital."
On a positive note, US HR departments have it a bit better than the rest of the world. With the exception of Latin America, employees outside the US appear much less satisfied overall with the companies they work for.
-63% of employees in the US and Latin America are "Extremely" or "Very" satisfied with their employer.
-61% in Canada
-53% in Europe
-48% in Asia-Pacific
The glaring disconnect, though, is universal -- employee perceptions specifically across nine different talent management areas surveyed in all geographies were much lower than the perceptions of HR, trending lower as company size increased.
In fact, employees' dissatisfaction with HR processes, policies and functions is a major driver behind intent to leave, with two out of five employees in the US indicating their intention to leave their companies within the next 12 months.

-Do we really know what our employees think?
-Have we asked then listened?
-Have we succeeded in creating a climate where employees feel their perceptions are valued?
-Have we succeeded in creating an open feedback loop?
-How do we measure employee communication success?
-How do we know that our employees would rank our HR and senior leadership as "Extremely Satisfied"?
